Tiered Reading Area

One of the museum’s highlights, the Shushan Foreign-Language Library, is arranged in a terraced fashion and serves as both a reading area for original foreign-language books and a space for reader activities. The steps that rise upward, set against an open-shelf backdrop, create a sharply defined “mountain of books” atmosphere. Adjacent to this, a staircase leads directly to the third floor, symbolizing the idea that “there is a path through the mountain of books—perseverance is the key.”
Step-by-step self-study area

The entire library features a circular corridor design that connects the various specialized reading zones within, minimizing enclosed thematic areas and fostering an open, inviting reading atmosphere. The furniture, crafted from mahogany-colored wood, exudes a sense of solidity and warmth, creating a cozy, home-like ambiance reminiscent of a personal study. The library will offer 30,000 volumes of original foreign-language books covering topics such as economics, literature, and art & design, available for free browsing by readers. To meet the reading needs of both expatriates and Chinese readers in the district who are interested in foreign-language materials, this library will become the one with the largest collection of original foreign-language books among all districts in Guangzhou.
Parent-Child Reading Area

The parent-child reading area is located on the first floor and has its own separate entrance. The reading area is divided into two zones, each themed around “the forest” and “the sunny beach park,” respectively, and both are designed with the element of “water” incorporated throughout. The interior furnishings feature predominantly curved bookshelves, cabinets, and tables and chairs. By using curves, the design not only captures the fluidity and form of water but also creates a cheerful atmosphere while effectively ensuring children’s safety.
Public Reading Area

“We are the driving force behind change—this is both our responsibility and our opportunity, because libraries can shape society into a better, fairer, stronger, and more diverse place.”
— Gloria Pérez Salmerón (IFLA President)

The multiple thematic reading zones within the library are interconnected, reducing the number of enclosed, isolated areas and fostering an open reading atmosphere. Combined with open bookshelves as a backdrop, this creates an angular, "mountain of books" aesthetic. Additionally, six functional rooms have been designed to provide readers with relatively independent spaces for reading and interaction.

The reading area has 1,000 seats, a designed collection capacity of 900,000 volumes, and is expected to serve a population of 1 million people. The space is clearly divided into distinct zones, with dedicated reading areas for visually impaired readers, seniors, and other groups. Different user groups can easily find reading spaces that suit their individual preferences and habits—truly thoughtful and user-friendly.
Multi-functional zone

The lecture hall is located on the basement level and can accommodate 418 people. Its design, inspired by origami, highlights changes in spatial layers and creates a sense of rhythmic beauty. Modern yet distinctive, it not only enhances the spatial lighting effects but also meets acoustic requirements.

Located on the second floor, the Music Hall is one of the library’s signature services. The hall is equipped with a high-definition, sound-transmitting projection screen and a 7.1-channel sound system, as well as a projector that supports 3D movie playback—providing an audiovisual experience that rivals that of a cinema. You can reserve a spot to participate in activities at the Music Hall, where you’ll have the chance to enjoy and learn about music, videos, and more, discovering intellectual pleasure through sight and sound while enhancing your cultural refinement.
